A Celebration of Life and Homegoing will be held for Mrs. Virginia Young Mitchell, 94, on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Patoutville, LA with the Rev. Joel Green, Jr., pastor, officiating. Public vistation will begin at the church at 10:00 a.m. She awaits the resurrection at St. Marks Baptist Church Cemetery in Jeanerette, LA.
On February 6, 2009 the angel came and with chilly fingers sealed the lips of Virginia Y. Mitchell. Her soul winged its flight from this world of sin, sorrow and pain to a place of eternal rest.
Sister Mitchell was born on September 16, 1914 to the union of Ebether Conway Young (Thompson) and Alex Young. She was the second of four children. She was united in holy matrimony to john W. Mitchell and to this union, nine children were born; seven sons and two daughters.
She became a Christian at an early age and was baptized by Rev. Landry. She was a member of Saint Mark Baptist Church where she was pastored by Rev. F.L. Riley and Rev. Joel Greene, Sr. She later joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church then pastored by Rev. Joseph Fields. Before her passing, Sis. Mitchell was under the leadership of Pastor Joel Greene, Jr. where she served on the deaconess board and was honored as being the oldest member of the church. She was a devoted Christian to God’s word and loyal to her church, family and friends. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and helpful and giving spirit.
Sis. Mitchell leaves to mourn and cherish her memories, four sons, Raymond (Ruby) Mitchell of Jeanerette, LA, Robert (Irma) Mitchell of New Iberia, LA, Leonard (Lula) Mitchell of Vacaville, CA, James (Traci) Mitchell of Downey, CA; two daughters, Arline Bernard, of Jeanerette, LA, Beverly (David) Hills of Patoutville, LA; one sister, Edna Y. Fontenette of Jeanerette, LA; thirty grand children, fifty-six great grandchildren, twelve great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She joins in glory with her husband, John W. Mitchell; parents, Alex Young and Ebether Young Thompson; sons, John Allen Mitchell, Alex Mitchell, Carroll Mitchell; one brother, Alex Young, Jr., two sisters, Jessica Moore and Ruby Young, son-in-law, Harry Bernard.
